Tax Alert | 2020 Ontario Request for Reconsideration Deadline Extended

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) in Ontario has announced that the deadline to file a Request for Reconsideration (RfR) for 2020 property tax assessments has been extended until September 28, 2020. The deadline had previously been extended from March 31 until 15 days after the end of the state of emergency declaration in Ontario. However, MPAC recently decided to fix the extended due date.
Taxpayers are reminded that only the owner of a property can file a RfR and, given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Ontario’s economy, it may be advisable to do so. In addition to potential property value reductions because of the pandemic, property owners should consider whether any other changes to a property’s income generation or physical structure might warrant filing a request.
The extended deadline is an opportunity to re-evaluate a property’s value for the current assessment cycle (tax years 2017–2021) and, where considered necessary, begin the process of challenging the property tax assessment.
