The Rare Disease Clinical Trials Programme is an open grant opportunity from LifeArc focused on advancing innovations for rare diseases through the clinical development pathway. The programme is intended to support clinical trial projects that can generate high-quality efficacy and safety data and help drive patient impact within the next 3–5 years.

Maximum award amount per project: Applicants can request up to £5 million per proposal.


Eligible Applicants

Applications are open to the following applicant types:

  • Not-for-profit institutions

  • including academic institutes

  • healthcare organisations

  • public sector research establishments

  • SMEs

Applicants may be based in the UK or abroad.


Eligible Activities

The programme is designed to fund clinical trials for rare diseases that will generate high-quality efficacy and safety data and support clinical development of promising innovations.

Specifically, the programme supports early-stage clinical trials focused on proof of efficacy, with consideration of the route to patient impact within five years.

Eligible project types or interventions can include:

  • Therapeutics, including repurposed drugs

  • Advanced therapies, including gene and cell therapies

  • Medical technologies or devices

  • Diagnostics that demonstrate potential to improve decision-making and outcomes
