On February 1, 2010, Finance Minister, J. Michael Miltenberger, delivered his budget, with expectations that the Northwest Territories economy will grow again in 2010, following a two-year decline due to the global economic slowdown.
The budget contains no new taxes, in recognition of the slow economic recovery. Effective April 1, 2010, the budget proposes that property tax rates, tobacco tax rates, and liquor mark-ups will increase as required to keep pace with inflation.
