British Columbia Tax Bulletin MFT 004

Tax Development May 24, 2011

The province of British Columbia has recently revised this bulletin to provide information for persons who apply for registration in the fuel tax refund program with an expired British Columbia vehicle registration.

If a person registers for the fuel tax rebate program with an expired British Columbia vehicle registration, the person’s refund eligibility will be limited to the period in which the person had a valid registration.  The time limit for claiming refunds is generally four years from the date the tax was paid on a fuel purchase.

If a person later becomes the registered owner or lessee of a motor vehicle or a person acquires an unregistered ownership interest in a motor vehicle, they will need to re-apply for the program.
