Proposed Application of Federal Carbon Pollution Pricing System in Alberta

The Government of Canada issued a press release and information regarding the implementation of the federal pollution pricing fuel charge in Alberta. The federal fuel charge will now apply to supplies of fuel in the province, effective January 1, 2020.
The repeal of the Alberta Carbon Levy, effective May 30, 2019, triggered a situation where the province only partially met federal benchmark requirements in terms of pollution pricing. The introduction of the federal fuel charge on fuel supplies will make the province compliant with the federal benchmark requirements and will allow Albertans to receive Climate Action Incentive payments, commencing in 2020, to offset increased costs from pollution pricing.
