British Columbia Consumer Carbon Tax Eliminated

Tax Development Apr 04, 2025

Recently, the Government of Canada announced that the consumer portion of the federal carbon tax will be eliminated. In line with this change, the British Columbia government has announced that legislation to cancel its provincial consumer carbon tax, effective April 1, 2025, will be tabled on March 31, 2025.

This decision to remove the carbon tax follows the province’s previously announced plans to prevent the provincial carbon tax rate from increasing as scheduled on April 1, 2025.

The elimination of the carbon tax is expected to help British Columbians as they continue to face cost-of-living pressures. The provincial government has indicated that it will continue to focus on addressing climate change by retaining a price on carbon for large emitters and providing incentives for businesses to adopt sustainable, lower-carbon technologies.
