Virginia Extends Sunset Dates for Sales Tax Exemptions

Legislation has been enacted that extends the sunset dates for three sales tax exemption programs. 

House Bill 1529 (effective July 1, 2017) concerns the Virginia sales tax holiday period for school supplies and clothing, Energy Star and WaterSense products, and hurricane preparedness items. Exempt school supplies include, but are not limited to, dictionaries, notebooks, pens, pencils, notebook paper, and calculators. The House Bill extends the sunset date from July 1, 2017 to July 1, 2022.

Senate Bill 804 (effective July 1, 2017) concerns the exemption for printing services purchased by an advertising business from a printer in Virginia for material that will be distributed outside the state. The Senate Bill extends the sunset date from July 1, 2017, to July 1, 2022.

House Bill 1543 (effective July 1, 2017) exempts the lease, rental, license, sale, other transfer, or use of any audio or video tape, film, or other audiovisual work for the purpose of licensing, distributing, broadcasting, commercially exhibiting, or reproducing the work or using or incorporating the work into other audiovisual products. Production services or fabrication services provided in connection with such production of audiovisual work are also exempt. The House Bill extends the sunset date from July 1, 2019 to July 1, 2022.
