Louisiana Governor Calls THIRD Special Session to Address State’s Budget Shortfall

Tax Development Jun 08, 2018

On June 18, 2018, the Louisiana Legislature will convene for ten calendar days in the third special session called this year by Governor John Bel Edwards to address the state’s estimated $650 million budget shortfall for fiscal year 2018–2019. The special session will begin at 4:00 p.m. on June 18, 2018, and conclude no later than 6:00 p.m. on June 27, 2018.

In his call for the third special session, Governor Edwards gave the Legislature significantly fewer items to consider for closing the budget gap than in the previous two special sessions. Of the seven objectives noted in the call, only two are revenue-raising measures, and both are limited to sales tax:

  • Adjustments to the imposition, collection, and remittance of sales and use taxes
  • Adjustments to state sales and use tax exclusions and exemptions

The Governor’s call can be viewed in its entirety on the state’s website.
