Dallas, Texas – Ryan, a leading global tax services firm, has acquired EnerTax Consultants L.P., an industry leader in severance tax consulting based in Houston, Texas. This acquisition adds a team of highly qualified tax specialists with proven experience reducing severance tax liabilities for large oil and gas exploration and production companies. It also adds a number of significant Fortune 500 relationships to Ryan’s client portfolio and creates one of the largest practices of its kind in the United States.
Severance tax is incurred when natural resources are extracted (“severed”) from the earth within a taxing jurisdiction. While crude oil and natural gas comprise the majority of severance tax collections in most jurisdictions, other resources such as coal, timber, and metals (including uranium) are often subject to severance tax as well.
“This strategic acquisition adds substantial capabilities to our Severance Tax practice to meet the increasing demand for Ryan’s tax services in the oil and gas industry,” said G. Brint Ryan, Chairman and CEO of Ryan. “Ryan and EnerTax clients will benefit tremendously from the unparalleled tax knowledge and expertise of our newly combined team of tax professionals, and we look forward to delivering them the highest levels of client service, value, and results.”
Matthew Travis, Sloan Smalley, and Jonathon Travis, Partners of EnerTax Consultants L.P., will join Ryan as Principals. Matthew Travis, a former Ryan employee, will also assume the role of Ryan Severance Tax Practice Leader. Mr. Travis has more than 14 years of state tax experience with an emphasis on severance tax, well incentives, and tax return compliance. He will drive continued strong growth in the practice and will manage the delivery of Ryan’s suite of severance tax services, which includes incentive identification and certification, drilling schedule reviews, compliance data scrubs, marketing cost deduction recalculation, tax reimbursement contract reviews, and adjustment notice consulting.
“My associates and I are thrilled to be joining forces with Ryan to provide world-class severance tax services to our long-standing clients,” said Mr. Travis. “Ryan’s core values and commitment to client service align closely with ours, and we are looking forward to serving new and existing clients as we build on our industry leadership position in severance tax consulting.”
