Ryan Announces Approval of United States Patent for Innovative Method and System for Extracting Information from Electronic Data Sources

Press Release May 16, 2012

Dallas, Texas – Ryan, a leading global tax services firm with the largest indirect tax practice in North America, today announced that the Firm’s application for a U.S. patent on a “Method and System for Extracting Information from Electronic Data Sources” has been allowed by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. It is expected that the patent relating to the Firm’s innovative data extraction technology, known as eCapture®, will be issued within the next three months.

Since the advent of digital technology and electronic commerce, an increasing number of electronic documents and forms are contained in the databases of corporate Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. Despite the growing need to process and mine an enterprise’s database of electronic documents, the management of those documents is often limited to mining techniques that are specific to the format of the data source and document layout. This creates data extraction challenges, given the fact that there can be hundreds of different basic types of documents in differing formats stored in data sources maintained by a large enterprise.

Ryan’s innovative eCapture® technology manages the search of those electronic documents in an efficient and cost-effective manner by automating the extraction of electronic images from corporate ERP systems. The Firm deploys the technology to eliminate the need for manual retrieval of electronic invoices and expedite the extraction process to minimize client disruptions during the provision of comprehensive tax services engagements. The resulting improvement in efficiency and effectiveness is central to the Firm’s ability to find significant tax saving opportunities and deliver superior client service.

“Ryan’s eCapture® technology is another resource that differentiates us in the marketplace and allows us to deliver even higher levels of client value and results,” said G. Brint Ryan, Chairman and CEO of Ryan. “This patent exemplifies the pioneering approach to tax that has driven our Firm to market leadership in the tax services industry.”
